In 2005, the Town Council adopted the Downtown Design & Urban Design Guidelines report. This document, funded by the Eastern Ontario Development Program, set goals and design standards, primarily for King Street, but also recommended redevelopment of our waterfront.
In 2008, with more funding from the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, the Town Council commissioned a master plan for the redesign of our waterfront. The primary focus was on the stretch of waterfront between the Sandra S. Lawn Harbour and the Canadian Coast Guard site. However, this plan was to incorporate a flow from east and west connecting this area with the Parks Canada waterfront to the east and our own Centennial Park to the west. The plan would also encourage a flow north and south between the river and our downtown business district.
The contract for this design was awarded to the Ainley Group of Ottawa (Engineers & Planners) in partnership with Commonwealth Heritage Resource Management of Ottawa. Open Houses were held in November of 2008 to get input from stakeholders and the general public.
A draft of the final design was presented at an Open House on March 31st, 2009. The concepts plans are available in electronic format below.
