Local Government Week

Local government week logoAbout Local Government Week

The Town of Prescott joins other municipalities across Ontario in celebrating Local Government Week annually, in the third week of October (October 15-21, 2017). This is an opportunity for residents, students and youth to increase their civic awareness and share their ideas about what's important to them.

Local Government Week was developed by the Province of Ontario, the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, and Treasurers of Ontario, and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario to celebrate the key role that Ontario local governments play in helping to define the character, priorities, and amenities of communities.

How Town of Prescott Celebrates Local Government Week

Students and Youth
The Town of Prescott will be celebrating Local Government Week with events held in the third week of the month of October. Administrative staff of the municipality are pleased to invite local classrooms to visit the Municipal Building for a short tour of Town Hall and overview of the municipalities' operations, followed by an interactive question and answer session in Council Chambers. We have found that Grade 5 students especially enjoy the visit because it supports their curriculum on government, but all grade levels are welcome. The visit lasts approximately 30 minutes. The visit is free of charge, and the Town can accommodate up to 40 students at a time.

Municipal Open House
On Tuesday, October 17, 2017 residents are invited to explore Town Hall & the Prescott Public Library. There will be prizes and giveaways, light refreshments, and screenings of our latest promotional video. Take this opportunity to meet some staff and councillors of the Town of Prescott, learn more about our municipal operations, and complete the 2018 Capital Expenditures Input Survey.

Photo Contest
During Local Government Week residents are invited to submit photos highlighting why our community is the best place to live (i.e., heritage sites, scenery, recreation facilities, etc). Participants are asked to email their images to or privately send them through our social media channels. All participants will be entered into a draw;  a winner will be chosen on Monday, October 23, 2017 as the recipient of a Town of Prescott gift basket.

Capital Expenditures Input Survey
During Local Government Week the Town of Prescott will be launching a survey for public input and engagement on capital expenditures for 2018. Visitors to the Municipal Open House (Tuesday, October 17) will have a chance to complete the survey while dropping in, and the survey will be shared online. The survey will remain open through the month of October, and results will be shared in November.

Community Awards
During Local Government Week the Town of Prescott will be opening the 2018 Community Awards nomination period for Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. Nominators can visit Town Hall or for a nomination form designed to help with the submission. Letters of recommendation are welcome to be submitted with the nomination form.

Social Media Campaign
Throughout the week we will be using our Faceook, Twitter, and Instagram platforms to share information about the role of municipal government, behind the scenes features, and profiling municipal departments. Be sure to follow us to stay up to date year-round!
