Commemorative Tree Program

| |

Overview

flowering pear tree in the spring with white blossoms

Through this program, the Town of Prescott will assist families or groups who wish to have a commemorative tree planted in a municipal park. Commemorative trees may be planted in remembrance of a loved one who has passed away, to celebrate a marriage or birth, to honour a retiree, or any other special occasion.

Process

The family/group will select a park and type of tree from a pre-supplied list, which will be reviewed annually. These trees have been specifically chosen for their growth potential in Prescott, and as complements to the existing urban forest. Final selection will be made according to preference, site conditions, and availability.

Applications for commemorative trees are accepted throughout the year. Trees will be planted by municipal staff in either the spring or the fall, as climate conditions permit. Placement of memorial wreaths, flowers, or other items on or around the tree is not permitted.

Cost

The cost of a commemorative tree is $400. This cost includes taxes, and covers the cost of planting the tree and the maintenance outlined below. An optional inscribed placard is available for an additional $150.

Part of the cost is eligible for a charitable tax receipt. A charitable receipt can be mailed to you upon request. Full payment and completed application form are required prior to planting. Payments will be accepted via cheque, debit, or cash. Please make payable to the Town of Prescott, or visit Town Hall for a cash or debit transaction.

Tree Selection

Applicants can list their preferred tree species on the application form. Special requests may be considered.

  • Flowering Pear – Pyrus calleryana - white blooms every spring, naturally grows in a tight symmetrical shape
  • Harlequin Maple – Acer platanoides – decorative tree with bright white and green variegated leaves
  • Colorado Blue Spruce – Pica pungens – sturdy tree with bluish needles which can be quite striking on a sunny day, great nesting site for birds

Site Selection

Applicants can list their preferred park location on the application form. Specific location within the park will be at the discretion of municipal staff, but will be considered in collaboration with the applicant. A site visit may be required with a representative of the municipality and the applicant. Special requests may be considered. Currently, applicants can choose to have their commemorative tree planted in:

  • Fairway Park
  • Centennial Park
  • Heritage River Trail
  • Roadside on selected municipal streets

Maintenance

Once planted, the trees are municipal property, and as such, will be maintained by the municipality. The municipality agrees to install a tree protection cage, add a mulch tree ring, and water the tree for a one year period.

Trees will be replaced at no charge within the first year of original planting date, or subsequent planting date, if required. In the event of vandalism, replacement will occur one time, for each the tree and/or commemorative plaque.
