(For Immediate Release)

Flags Lowered to Half Mast in Memory of the Children Whose Remains Were Discovered at the Kamloops Residential School in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation Territory. (Prescott, ON) Today, the Town’s flags are being lowered in memory of the 215 children whose remains were discovered on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation territory. The flags will remain lowered for nine days – 215 hours to represent each life.

“Our hearts break for the 215 Indigenous children who lost their lives at the former residential school in Kamloops, and for all those victimized by the brutal residential school system,” said Mayor Brett Todd. “May these 215 victims and their families be at peace. Small gestures like lowering flags need to be accompanied by real national action toward truth and reconciliation, to seek justice for all those who suffered and lost their lives in residential schools.”

The Town of Prescott recognizes that lowering flags is just a small gesture. Real action needs to be taken when it comes to Truth and Reconciliation, beginning with forensic examinations of former residential school sites and criminal investigations to ensure that justice is finally sought for the countless children and their families who suffered and were silenced for so long.
